CMU camp notes: Expect heavy defensive rotations, Drinkall challenges squad after sloppy team period

While the end of practice wasn't stellar on Friday, the Chippewas got a lot done — and have plenty to keep improving.

Mt. Pleasant — After watching it stoically from the stands (for a birds eye view) and then the back of the end zone, Matt Drinkall let his team know what he thought of a red zone 11-on-11 period to end practice.

The short answer: Not good.

With numerous miscues, both from the offense and the defense, Drinkall forcefully explained to his gathered team after practice that such miscues cost games, that they need to be at their best and most focused in the red area, and that he nearly considered restarting that practice period, given the lack of focus, energy and execution on Friday. Expletives were involved.

This is not to say it was wholly a disaster, as Drinkall reminded his team there was plenty of good coming from that period, too. But the overall takeaway? Not good enough, with improvements expected (demanded, perhaps) the next time Central Michigan takes the practice field.

Central Michigan camp notes: QB competition open, Glasser finally a full go
The Chippewas are seeking to live up to a higher standard in Matt Drinkall’s second season at the helm in Mt. Pleasant.

And while this might seem like a downer, Drinkall brought it back to the bigger, overarching point: Central Michigan wants to compete for and win championships, and those 11-on-11 periods around the end of practice didn't live up to that standard.

Here are some takeaways from Friday’s practice.

How that sloppy 11-on-11 portion looked

It was specifically a red zone period, and the biggest bugaboo for the offense was bad snaps, with several shotgun snaps hitting the turf.
