Western Michigan’s new-look defensive front faces major test vs. Michigan’s run game
Western Michigan will line up against a Wolverines offense that wants to run the ball and should be pretty good at it.
Kalamazoo — By Lance Taylor’s account, Western Michigan’s defensive line is the most improved overall unit on the team since the group first came together in January.
“I’m excited about this group,” Taylor said. “I think they are the most improved group from this team from winter to right now and where they stand today. And it’s because of competition in the room.”
What to make of Western Michigan’s new-look defensive front is easily the biggest question facing the Broncos entering a Week 1 showdown with Michigan on Saturday evening at Michigan Stadium. WMU is replacing all four primary defensive line starters and both linebackers from a stalwart 2025 defense, and the group is being marshaled by a new coordinator in Greer Martini. A heavy transfer haul over the winter restocked the front, and an offseason of improvements have Taylor and Co. optimistic about how that group can impact games.
And facing a Jason Beck-led Michigan offense that’s expected to run the ball well behind a strong offensive line and a highly-talented running back duo, with some quarterback runs mixed in, Western Michigan’s defensive front is getting a massive early test.
“Replacing two NFL players, a lot of production, but I’m really excited about the group as a whole,” Taylor said.
