Hello, and welcome to Mitten Football!
This is a new sports journalism project, created by Andrew Graham to cover the five Division 1 football programs in the state of Michigan, and all that entails.
And it's an exciting time to wade in to coverage of college football, especially in Michigan.
Michigan and Michigan State are entering Year 2 under respective coaching regimes in an expanded Big Ten. Central Michigan is embarking on the Matt Drinkall Era. Eastern Michigan seeks to regain its form from early in Chris Creighton's tenure and compete for MAC titles. And Lance Taylor's Western Michigan is still hunting to recapture the magic that carried the program to it's highest-ever heights in the 2010s.
And all this is occurring against a backdrop of a rapidly changing sport.
So it feels apt to now be launching a dedicated journalistic endeavor to cover these programs. And it's a great time and opportunity to set ourselves apart.
Whereas legacy outlets are hollow shells of former selves and locals are all but wiped out, and mass-market digital and television outlets traffic in hot-takery and message board gossip, there is rife ground upon which to build a better brand of college football coverage.
The here will be regular, thorough coverage of these programs on a subscription model — you pay a regular rate, and get regular coverage in return. No need for click-baity headlines and selling out to social media, just people wanting good coverage of college football teams in Michigan paying for just that.
And revenues coming from a steady subscriber base and not internet traffic means coverage need not be shaped by a need to generate social media attention in ways that are increasingly detrimental to good, quality sports writing.
Instead, time and resources will be dedicated to crafting informative, thorough reporting and analysis on the Division 1 football programs in the Mitten.
